Download and Installation

What are the system requirements for Avast Cleanup for Android?

You can install and run the latest version of Avast Cleanup for Android on any device running operating systems Google Android 5.0 (Lollipop, API 21) and higher.

If you are using a custom ROM, the app may not work as expected. Please report any feedback regarding this issue via Avast Support pages.

Avast Cleanup is not supported by and cannot be installed or run on Symbian, iOS, Microsoft Windows Phone/Mobile, Bada, WebOS, or any mobile operating system other than Android. This app does not work on iPhone or iPad devices.

How can I uninstall Avast Cleanup from Android?

Uninstall the app by searching for Avast Cleanup in the Google Play Store and tapping Uninstall from the app info screen.

If you are experiencing issues with uninstalling the app, follow these additional steps:

Open your device Settings.
Select Apps, then Avast Cleanup.
Tap Force Stop.
In the Storage section, tap Clear data and Clear cache.
Select Uninstall and then tap OK to confirm.

Avast Cleanup is no longer installed on your Android device.

Quick Clean

What is Quick Clean?

Avast Cleanup for Android cleans your device by removing unnecessary files to free your storage space. When you tap the Quick Clean tile on the main screen of the app, you can view the types of items that are available to clean. These items are separated into 2 groups:

Safe to clean: this is data which has been carefully selected to ensure that it is truly dispensable, including thumbnails, APKS, residual files, and hidden, visible, and shared cache. All categories are ticked by default as Safe to clean, except Thumbnails.
For your consideration: this is data which may or may not be valuable to you. We recommend reviewing items included in this group and ticking only those items which are dispensable. All items are unticked by default and will not be deleted unless you manually select them for deletion.

It is not possible to restore items that are deleted during a Quick Clean, so we recommend using caution when deleting items under For your consideration.

Can I customize the types of files that are processed during a Quick Clean?

Configure Quick Clean to ignore item types that you do not want cleaned by following these steps:

Tap Quick Clean on the main Avast Cleanup screen.
Tap the box next to an item type to untick it and ensure that it isn't processed during a clean. Ticked item types are cleaned by default.
Tap the down arrow next to an item type to view specific items on your device. Tap the box next to a specific item to untick it and ensure that it isn't processed during a clean.

All item types under Safe to clean have been carefully selected to ensure that they are truly dispensable. We recommend using caution when deleting items under For your consideration.

How can I ensure important items are not deleted during a Quick Clean?

The Quick Clean function was carefully designed to only remove data that is truly dispensable, such as system caches that can be easily replaced, or APK files that are already installed. If you're concerned, you can define the exact items and item types that are cleaned in the Quick Clean menu.

Can I restore files that are deleted during a Quick Clean?

No. You can't restore the files that are deleted during a Quick Clean. This function was designed to only remove unnecessary data such as system caches and already installed APK files.

Why does the Quick Clean button show such a low amount of removable space?

If you have recently run a Quick Clean, the amount of removable space may be low because your apps have not created more dispensable data yet. Another reason may be that some items on the Quick Clean menu are unchecked and therefore ignored when the clean is run. Check which items are selected for cleaning if you are concerned.

Why does the Quick Clean scan run slowly or pause mid-progress?

During a scan, Avast Cleanup probes several folder-levels deep to identify all dispensable data on your device. Depending on the number of items Avast Cleanup needs to scan and the computing power of your device, a scan may take several seconds to several minutes. If the scanner encounters a particularly complex folder, a notification is displayed in the scanner progress bar.

Why is the Thumbnails category unticked by default?

Thumbnails are the small versions of pictures used for previews. Deleting thumbnails during a Quick Clean can delete significant amounts of data on some devices, while on others the effect is very limited. For this reason, the category is unticked by default. You can test the effectiveness of this option on your device and decide whether to tick it or not.

What is Automatic Cleaning?

Automatic Cleaning is a paid feature in Avast Cleanup Pro for Android. It allows the app to run regular cleanings without you manually activating them each time. To configure Automatic Cleaning, follow these steps:

Tap ☰Menu in the top-left corner of the app interface.
Under Cleanup Pro, tap Automatic Cleaning.
Tap the slider so that it changes to ON to enable this feature. If you have not yet purchased Avast Cleanup Pro, you will be prompted to do so before you can configure Automatic Cleaning.
Specify how regularly you want to schedule cleans (every 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, or week), and the minimum amount of space you want to clean.

If you enable the Notify me when cleaning is complete option, you are informed each time an automatic cleaning is complete.

Cloud Transfers

What is 'the cloud' and which cloud storage services does Avast Cleanup for Android support?

'The cloud' refers to virtual storage space where you can keep media and files such as photos, videos, and documents. Several cloud storage providers exist. With the Avast Cleanup app, you can connect to and transfer files and media from your device directly to Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive.

You can be connected to multiple Google Drive accounts, one Dropbox account, and one OneDrive account at the same time. Connect by selecting ☰Menu ▸ Settings ▸ Cloud services.

How do I add an item to a cloud transfer queue?

To transfer an item to your cloud storage account, follow these steps:

Tap ☰Menu in the top-left corner of the app interface.
Tap Pictures, Apps, Audio, Video, or Files, depending on the type of item you want to transfer.
Select any items that you want to transfer, tap Menu (ellipsis) in the bottom-right corner and select Move to cloud.

If you are not already connected to a cloud account, tap Connect to cloud to open your Cloud services settings.

If your device is connected to the internet (or Wi-Fi if you turned on Upload files only on Wi-Fi), the transfer starts immediately.

How can I connect to or disconnect from a cloud storage account in Avast Cleanup for Android?

To connect to or disconnect from a cloud storage account, follow these steps:

Go to ☰Menu ▸ Cloud transfers.
Perform the relevant action:
- To connect: tap Connect next to your preferred cloud provider and follow the steps to sign in or create a new account.

Why does a file upload restart from the beginning after a transfer queue is paused?

As incomplete file transfers are automatically deleted by cloud service providers when a transfer is paused, you can only pause and resume an entire queue.

Where can I find items after they are transferred to cloud storage?

To locate an item that you transferred to cloud storage, sign into your cloud storage service and access the relevant folder:

Your transferred items are organized in the same way that they were organized on your device.

Why did Avast Cleanup for Android fail to transfer an item to my cloud storage account?

The typical reasons a file transfer can fail are:

There is insufficient space available in your cloud storage account.

Photos

What is the Photos feature and what does it include?

When you tap Photos on the main screen of the app, Avast Cleanup analyzes your photos for opportunities to clear space on your device. The app shows you a number of tips, which may include:

Optimizable images: photos that can be resized to the size of your device screen to make them smaller and less space-consuming. Images that are already the same size as your device screen (for example, screenshots) or smaller are not optimizable.
Old photos: photos that were time-stamped a month or more ago.
Similar photos: groups of photos with nearly identical content. Avast Cleanup labels the highest quality image in each group as Best photo.
Bad photos: photos that are out of focus, dark, or of low quality.
Photos for review: photos that Avast Cleanup has identified as possible low quality images. This section allows you to swipe left or right to manually delete or keep photos.

Tap the Review and Clean or Review and Optimize button in any section to view and select images for deletion. You can choose to remove the images from your device, transfer them to a Cloud service, or optimize them to save space.

To customize which tips you see, tap ⋮Menu (three dots) next to TIP and select Show this tip less often, or Customize tips to change your Analysis Preferences.

How is advanced optimization in the paid version of Avast Cleanup for Android different from photo optimization in the free version?

When you optimize a photo on your device, the pixel size is decreased so that it looks almost the same as the original, but consumes much less space on your device.

With an Avast Cleanup Pro subscription, you can control how much you want to optimize the size and quality of each image.

When compared, original and optimized images look very similar on your device screen. However, if you want to print the image, we recommend you use the original, higher quality version.

What is Photo Optimizer?

Photo Optimizer is a paid feature in Avast Cleanup Pro for Android which allows you to customize the optimization of your images. For maximum optimization, set the size to 0.75 x Screen and the compression to Aggressive.

What is the Apps feature?

When you tap Apps from the main app screen, Avast Cleanup analyzes which apps on your device may be consuming a large amount of battery, storage space, or data.

The Apps screen is divided into the following sections:

Apps Overview: Tap Installed, System, or App Data to view and manage apps and app data installed on your device. Installed apps are not necessary for the running of your device and can be removed. System apps are necessary for the running of your device and cannot be removed, but you can hibernate system apps to release device memory. Tap Storage to view data for each app individually.
Drainers: Identifies apps that may be draining your data and battery.
Usage: Displays apps based on frequency of use. You can view Least used, Most used, and Unused apps.
Running: Displays the number of apps currently running in the background.
Growing: Displays apps that are growing and occupying more space on your device than previously.
Notifying: Displays apps that are sending the most notifications. Tap this panel to view your list of Notifying apps.

You may need to grant Avast Cleanup permission to track your usage data:

After you tap Show All or See All Details a permission dialog appears, select Grant Permission.
Tap Avast Cleanup.
Tap the slider next to Allow usage tracking so it changes to ON.

Avast Cleanup now shows how much time you spend using each app. Knowing how much time you spend using each app is helpful when determining which apps to uninstall from your device.

How can I delete unwanted apps from my device?

Go to ☰Menu ▸ Apps. A summary of your apps and the amount of space each is consuming appears.
Tap the System tab.
Tick one or more apps then tap Menu (ellipsis) in the bottom-right corner of the interface.
Tap either Uninstall updates or Hibernate.
Follow the on-screen instructions to grant any necessary permissions.

What is app data and what are the consequences of deleting it from my Android device?

App data is accumulated and stored (often unnecessarily) on your device when you use certain apps. Avast Cleanup for Android identifies app data that you can safely remove from your device. When removing app data, you should consider the impact that removal may have on the functionality of the source app. For example, each time you open Google Maps, the app re-downloads any offline maps that were removed by Avast Cleanup, which could affect performance. Deleting OBB type app data, which is often associated with large games, has the benefit of releasing a lot of space on your device without deleting the game itself. However, you may need to re-install or re-download the OBB file during gameplay.

How can I delete app data from my device?

Follow these steps:

Go to ☰Menu ▸ Apps. A summary of your apps and the amount of space each is consuming appears.
Tap the App Data tab.
Tick one or more app data types then tap the Delete icon that appears.
Tap Delete to confirm.

If you delete an app data file, all data related to the selected application is deleted, including any custom settings or OBB files related to additional features bought on Google Play Store. After you delete these files, the application runs in default configuration with no additional features.

How can I organize apps and app data in Avast Cleanup for Android?

Tap the App Data tab.

Why don't certain app caches appear in the App Data section?

The items included in this section are limited to data from some of the most commonly used apps. These apps have been carefully analyzed and selected to be included, as deleting them is unlikely to cause issues with your device. However, we recommend you always use caution when deleting app data.

Boost Memory

What is the Boost Memory feature?

Boost Memory stops apps from running in the background when they are not in use. This action frees the memory space that was occupied by this background activity for other purposes.

Tap Boost Memory in the main app interface to see a list of all apps currently running on your device.
Tick which apps you would like to stop (all non-system apps are ticked by default).
Tap Hibernate Apps to stop apps. Hibernated apps will only restart when opened manually.

If you are using Memory Boost for the first time, you are asked to grant a one time permission, which allows Avast Cleanup to hibernate apps.

What is app hibernation?

The first time you use Boost Memory, you will be asked to grant a one time permission, which allows Avast Cleanup to Hibernate apps. Once an app is hibernated, it will usually not affect your memory until you actively reopen it. If you choose to skip this step, Avast Cleanup will still stop selected apps from running in the background, but these apps may instantly reload and continue to occupy memory space.

Tap Boost Memory in the app interface and select the items you want to hibernate.
Tap Grant Permission to allow Avast Cleanup to hibernate apps.
Scroll down and tap Avast Cleanup in your device's Accessibility menu. Tap the slider so that it changes to ON and tap OK to confirm.
Tap Hibernate Apps in the Boost Memory interface.

Certain apps may leave hibernation before being actively reopened. For example, if you hibernate Facebook messenger and then open the Facebook app, Facebook messenger will no longer be in hibernation.

How long do the effects of the Boost Memory feature last?

This depends on whether you have granted Avast Cleanup permission to hibernate apps. A hibernated app usually does not affect your memory again until you actively reopen it.

Can I exclude apps from the effects of the Boost Memory feature?

Yes. Every time you use the Boost Memory feature, you are prompted to untick any apps that you do not want to be affected. By default, all non-system apps are ticked.

Is it harmful to stop an app with the Boost Memory feature?

No. Mobile apps are designed to cope with sudden closures, so stopping apps via the Boost Memory feature is not harmful.

When you upgrade from one paid version of Avast Cleanup to another (for example, from Avast Cleanup Pro to Avast Mobile Ultimate), Google Play Store automatically calculates how much of your original subscription was unused. To compensate you for the value of this unused subscription, you receive free access to the new paid product for a limited time period. This means that you are not immediately charged when you activate your new paid subscription. The length of your free access period depends on how much of your original subscription was unused. When the free access period ends, your new paid subscription automatically begins and you are charged for your chosen subscription plan (1 year or 1 month). The date of your first payment is displayed during the subscription upgrade.
